Like probably 99% of the population, you have a habit. Whether good or bad, there’s some things you’ll just do automatically or if you prefer, instinctively. It could be waking up on the left side of the bed every morning or touching your hair when you talk. Whatever it is, you don’t know why but you do it. In the game of poker, we prefer to call these patterns tendencies. Knowing your opponent’s tendencies as well as your own is a major step towards becoming a profitable and winning player. Many players and pros especially will try to determine their opponent’s tendencies early in order to make as much profit as possible. Usually they simply categorize their opponent into various categories that have become somewhat standard types of player in the poker community.
The Loose Poker Players
In short, loose poker players are those who have no concept of odds and will simply play on instinct. Loose players are the ones that will basically gamble the most by making illogical and irrational decisions. They’ll call or raise any hand and that could be in any position. These are the most unpredictable players out there but luckily for you, it means your job of beating your opponent could be easier. Usually weaker hands can give you a good edge against loose opponents. If loose opponents are willing to play high cards only, you don’t need to worry about making more than top pair or two pairs to beat them.
The Aggressive Poker Players
Less crazy than loose players, aggressive players are just as or even more dangerous than loose poker players. This type of player will often raise or re-raise pots to test you. What makes these players dangerous is that by raising, they are showing strength which can make it harder for you to call or re-raise a bet with a weak hand. Although they often test their opponents, sometimes their raises can be their downfall. With a strong hand, there is no need for you to re-raise or raise your aggressive opponent simply because you know they will do it for you. This leaves you with the opportunity to re-raise them and make them pay more then what they were ready to pay to see an additional card.
The Tight Poker Players
Probably the easiest poker players out there, tight poker players are the complete opposite of loose poker players. They will be very conservative and will only play the best starting hands. They will rarely raise which will leave them vulnerable to your raises. In many cases they will either fold or simply call so that leaves you in control of the betting. What if they raise? Well if you know they are tight, it’s easy to let your hand go because you know your tight opponent will only raise if they have you beat. When facing tight poker players, marginal hands can give you a nice edge.
Now although there are only 3 types of player mentioned here, you’ll never meet one of these types of player out there. Why? Because it’s poker, players will mix it up. Some may be loose-aggressive or tight-aggressive. In lower stakes you may get to see one of the 3 mentioned above, but when the stakes are bigger, you can be sure no poker player want to be read like a book so they’ll mix it up. This is where it’s important for you to be able to quickly identify the types of opponent at your table in order to reduce your unnecessary losses. I’ll go over some of the strategies available for the different type of tendencies so stay tune for more!
